• 'Uphold the Weak'

One of my favorite memories from our daughter's childhood is the year she played baseball in the “pee-wee” division of five- and six-year-olds. I’m glad I volunteered as an assistant coach, because to this day it’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.

It was a comedy of errors (no pun intended). Many of the kids had never played baseball before, which meant we had to teach them how to do everything. They didn’t know how to put on a mitt. They didn’t know how to hold or swing a bat.…

  • "Do Not Worry About Your Life"

“For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? … Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’” (Matthew 6:25, 31).

For a couple of years now, a few of our men have been meeting on Tuesdays at 6:00 a.m. for breakfast and a short Bible study.…

  • 2 Corinthians 4: Thoughts on Evangelism

    The apostle Paul wrote:

Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we received mercy, we do not lose heart, but we have renounced the things hidden because of shame, not walking in craftiness or adulterating the word of God, but by the manifestation of truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not…

  • I'll Fly Away

Some glad morning when this life is o’re, I’ll fly away.
To a home on God’s celestial shore, I’ll fly away.

My grandparents on my father’s side and I were very close, while I was growing up.  My grandfather preached in Victoria, Texas, which is only 30 minutes away from where I grew up, and after my grandfather retired, they started to worship with my family in Yoakum. On Sundays they would come over for morning services and then stay the afternoon with us until the evening service, which led to countless lunches filled with laughter, good conversation, Memaw’s rolls, and occasionally…

  • The Churches of Christ... What are They?

The Churches of Christ...What are They?

    Roy E. Cogdill

We have called attention to the teaching of the New Testament that the Church of our Lord universally is made up of individuals and is not composed of "churches." Universally it is a relationship between the saved of the earth and the sacred three of the Godhead. The New Testament also teaches just as definitely that "churches of Christ" in their own locality are organic, functional entities. These "churches" were independent of the other, each had its own organization, carrying on its own work and was a complete entity or…

  • 7 Habits of Highly Effective Christians

Is your life busy? We are pulled in so many different directions that we sometimes wonder at the end of the day what we accomplished. How is your spiritual well-being? Do you find it difficult to find time for spiritual things during your week? Below are 7 activities that will help you in your Christian walk, if you incorporate them into everyday habits.

        1. Begin each day at judgment. Steven Covey, author of “7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” says to begin with the end in mind. We need to begin each day with the sober thought of putting…

    Fellowship with God is Conditional

    by Jonathan Perz

In John 15:14, the Lord Jesus says, "You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you." Amazingly enough, one word within this phrase causes much difficulty. It is the word "IF." Though only two letters long, it is one of the most powerful words in scripture. Why? Because it implies a condition that must be met for the statement to be true. In order to maintain a friendship with the Lord, one must do whatever He commands. Jesus states this in plain language in

  • Do All in the Name of the Lord – Colossians 3:1-17

Colossians 3 tells us some of the ways we can live a life devoted to Christ. Paul first speaks generally about the things we must do, like setting our minds on things above, but as the chapter progresses, he gets more specific. He tells us things we shouldn’t do and then gives examples of what we should do instead.

Those of us who were baptized in Christ’s name, and have committed our lives to Christ, should understand that we are dead to the world. That commitment we made allows us to live, but it also demands a life devoted to Christ,…
