• What is exhortation?

Here at the Cedar Park church of Christ, we have written articles through The Exhorter for many years! Over the years, numerous writers have written articles pertaining to everything from salvation to personal growth, as well as ways to study your Bible more effectively, sometimes using light humorous stories, poetry, biographies, or a sense of urgency. While these are all very beneficial things, they still leave the obvious question: what does it mean to exhort, or to be an exhorter? A quick Google search says the word “exhort” these days means: “to strongly encourage or urge (someone) to do something.”…

  • Home

I grew up on a farm in the Panhandle of Texas. In the recesses of my heart, it will always be "home." I loved wheat harvest. Golden heads of ripened wheat are one of God's inspiring portraits in this world. Mom would bring lunch to the field. I remember drinking sweet tea out of a quart ma- son jar complete with the two-part brass lid, the ice causing the glass to sweat in the hot June sun. I loved it all. Driving with dad down the "turnrow" in the morning…

  • How do you see life? Seeing God Regardless of Circumstance

There is a story about David before he becomes king. Saul had been chasing him around for years, until finally David is driven from his heritage to the land of the Philistines, the enemies of the Hebrews. Somehow, even though David was a mighty warrior for Saul, he finds favor in the eyes of Achish, one of the princes of Philistia, who gives David and his followers a city to dwell in by the name of Ziklag.

While abiding in the city, David continues to raid and fight against the enemies of the Hebrews, all the while making Achish believe that…

  • Assurance of Salvation

There is such a thing as a well grounded assurance of salvation and there is also such a thing as ill founded presumption. One of the primary goals of the Apostle John in the letter of 1John is to instill confidence in genuine believers that they are right with God and need not fear His judgment.  Consider some of the signs of life given to us in 1 John that help answer the question of “Where do I stand with God?”

The first sign of life is that we are walking in the light1 John 1:6-7. Light…

  • A Flood of Truth

In the mist shrouded world of ancient legends, one story reappears in all cultures. The story of a Great Flood. Will and Ariel Durant write in The Life of Greece: "In the 15th century before our era, said Greek tradition, the iniquity of the human race provoked Zeus to overwhelm it with a flood, from which one man, Deucalion, and his wife Pyrrha, alone were saved, in an ark or chest that came to rest on Mt. Parnassus" (39).The ancient Mesopotamian world was replete with the Flood story (i.e.,…

  • Thomas: From Unbelief to Faith

There’s not much mentioned about the apostle Thomas in scripture. What is said has left some folks with the impression that “Doubting Thomas” is an appropriate nickname. Looking closely at his actions though, we could very well use adjectives such as “Courageous Thomas” or “Honest Thomas.” One thing is certain, we would do well to adopt the mantra “when in doubt, be like Thomas.”

In John chapter 11, we find the first mention of Thomas. Mary and Martha are in Bethany with their brother Lazarus who is gravely ill. Being a surveyor, it’s a given that I look at…

  • Come and See: Becoming a Follower of Jesus

Imagine that you are going about your day. It is just like any other day. Someone comes up to you. They seem to know you. They know things about you that no one knows. They show you things that are impossible. They speak words of wisdom, unlike anything you have ever heard. They ask you to come and see. Imagine Jesus came up and chose you.

This was a reality for twelve men called to be apostles. Twelve men who Jesus personally selected to be with Him. These men where present for everything. All of the teaching sessions, including the explanations afterwards.  Each and every one of the…
