Do Scientists Believe

Do Scientists Believe in God?

Atheists are sometimes heard to say, “All real scientists reject the notion that
there is a God.” If that were true it would not prove whether God exists. History
is filled with times when the consensus of the “experts” later proved to be wrong.
In reality, many of the world’s best scientific minds have believed that there is
compelling evidence to support belief in an intelligent creator. The so-called
“Scientific Revolution” actually began because men believed that the physical
universe is governed by laws which can be studied and understood – laws
established by a great lawgiver. Consider just a few:
Nicolaus Copernicus: “To know the mighty works of God, to comprehend His
wisdom and majesty and power, to appreciate in degree the wonderful working of
His laws, surely all of this must be a pleasing and acceptable mode of worship to
the Most High.”
Sir Isaac Newton: “ We are to believe in one God, the father, almighty in
dominion, the maker of heaven and earth and of all things therein.”
Rene Descartes: “But from the fact that I cannot think of God except as existing,
it follows that existence is inseparable from God, and that for this reason he really
exists.”
Gottfried Leibniz: “The knowledge of God is no less the beginning of science than
his essence and will are the beginning of things.”
Galileo Galilei: “I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has
endowed us with senses, reason, and intellect has intended us to forego their
use.”
Johannes Kepler: “I give you thanks, Creator and God, that you have given me
this joy in thy creation, and I rejoice in the works of your hands.”
Louis Pasteur: “The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of
the Creator.”
Robert Boyle: “God would not have made the universe as it is unless He intended
us to understand it.”
Those same convictions are held by many eminent scientists in modern times.
Dr. Wernher von Braun, “the father of the U. S. space program,” wrote and spoke
extensively about his faith in God: “The better we understand the intricacies of
the universe and all it harbors, the more reason we have found to marvel at the
inherent design upon which it is based . . . Anything as well ordered and perfectly
created as is our universe must have a Maker, there can be no other way.”
Francis Collins was the director of the Human Genome Project - the study and
mapping of the 3 billion bases that make up the DNA molecule. Early in life
Collins was an atheist, but the evidence he observed led him to write a book
entitled, The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief.
In recent years, as we learn more and more about the amazing complexity of
God’s creation, many distinguished scientists are a part of what is known as The
Intelligent Design Movement.
Does the Bible have anything to say about “scientists” who refuses to believe in
their Creator? Yes, it does:
That which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it

evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes,
His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being
understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. -
Rom 1:19-20
The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” - Psa 53:1

______
One Solitary Life

A man was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He worked
as a carpenter until He was thirty, then for three years He was an itinerant
preacher.
He never owned a home, never wrote a book, never held an office, never had a
family, never went to college. He never traveled more than two hundred miles
from where He was born. He never did any of the things that usually accompany
greatness.
While still a young man, the tide of popular opinion turned against him. One of
His friends betrayed Him, another denied Him, and then they all ran away from
Him. He was turned over to His enemies, went through the mockery of a trial,
and was then nailed to a cross between two thieves. While He was dying His
executioners gambled for the only property He had – His clothes. When He
died, He was buried in a borrowed tomb through the pity of a friend.
Twenty centuries have come and gone, but He remains the centerpiece of all
human history. All the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed;
all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that ever reigned, have not
affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as that one solitary life.

Little Ears Are Listening

Every parent who reads this will probably be able to recall occasions when they
were astonished to discover that their small child had observed and remembered
something which the parent never thought they noticed.
Some friends of mine once told me about such an experience. Daddy had been
using his computer to access information on the Internet. One day their four-
year-old daughter was playing outside and spotted a spider on her swing set. She
ran in the house and yelled excitedly, “Mommy, there’s a spider in the back yard
and it’s building a web site!”
When I heard that and finally stopped laughing it occurred to me that this is just
a reminder of how we often unknowingly influence the thinking of the young,
impressionable children around us.
How very careful we need to be about what we say and do before those attentive
little eyes and ears!
