SHARPENED SENSES

In the Bible many times Christians are admonished to be on the watch, looking around, etc. There is a sense of urgency in which one must be prepared for what might happen or what temptations might come. This requires our senses to be on the alert. The word “discernment” means the power of faculty of the mind, by which it distinguishes one thing from another, as truth of falsehood.

At times the opponents of Christianity can be very accurate in describing the effects of the gospel. In Acts 17, the mob which dragged Jason and other brethren before the rulers of the city accused them, saying, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.” The gospel had indeed turned the world upside down.
But how did the gospel turn the world upside down? The gospel did not turn the world upside down with riots and protests. There was no insurgency or revolution…

Perhaps you have heard that quotation before. It has no doubt been repeated many times in sermons or articles such as this one.
However, there is something strangely ironic about it. It comes from a play by Oscar Wilde and was actually spoken by a self-serving, hedonistic man who scoffed at morality and lived solely for pleasure.
LESSONS FROM A FEAST IN BETHANY
John 11:1-11 contains the record of a feast which was given for Jesus in Bethany. Three of the gospels record this same event (Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; John 12:1-11).
