Jesus called them, one by one. When He named His 12 apostles, He chose “those whom He Himself wanted” (Mark 3:13). The implication is that no one else would have wanted them. They were not the only people He had to choose from. Jesus had throngs and throngs of disciples, so many that the crowds on one occasion were stepping on one another. But out of all His disciples, He chose these twelve for a special purpose.
We sometimes think of the apostles only in the sense of the group. The Scriptures certainly speak of them that way: “the…
In his book, The Pattern of Authority, Bernard Ramm says, "Having rejected the authority of the Roman Church and its efforts to underwrite the authority of the Bible, Calvin might then have turned to human reason to demonstrate the authority of the Bible. But there were two matters causing hesitancy in this procedure: (1) the human reason had come under certain darkening effects from sin; and (2) being fully persuaded by human reason the believer would still have but human faith. There must be a divine certainty about divine matters." (p.28-29) Ramm says Calvin found his answer in the "internal…
First it was "homosexual." It covered both genders. That was back when there were just two genders. Then it was "gays," hijacking a good adjective and messing up a lot of old, nostalgic songs.
Then it was decided by someone I guess that homosexual or gay women needed their own label so the old word, "lesbian" was trotted out and it became "lesbians and gays."
Then it was realized that likely the majority of these actually have sex with males and females and perhaps others so they are given the label, "bi-sexual."
Then, it was apparently determined that men who think they are…

Rom. 12:1-2 instructs me to be a living sacrifice, "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is — His good, pleasing and perfect will." My sacrifice should be pleasant to God, (II Corinthians 2:15), not offensive as in Deuteronomy 17:1. Although we no longer…
Hypocrisy Hypocrisy and the practice of it. Nobody likes it. You don’t like it. I don’t like it. Jesus didn’t like it (Matt. 6:1-24, 23:11-33). Even those who practice it must not really like it, as they so often seem … Read More →

Oh, to be young again! I recently observed the enthusiasm of youth a few weeks ago when Steve Forbes spoke at the Florida College leadership dinner. Though his advice on overcoming trials and tribulations was helpful to all, one of the most impressive things about the evening was the special group of young Christian students at Florida College. These kids looked so youthful with their bright smiles and joyous laughter. There was a lot of hugging and hand shaking as they greeted one another or said goodbye. Their energy level was almost…
Go the Extra Mile Near the entrance of Gethsemane, He left eight of the apostles and then took Peter, James and John closer to the place where He was to pray. He left this “inner circle” and “…went a little … Read More →

Drunkenness of Holidays Not for Kings While many think of the holidays as a season of peace, good-will and giving, a more honest assessment might conclude that as the end-of-year holidays descend upon us (Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years), it … Read More →
