What affect has our hurry scurry world had on Christians obeying (John 15:12) "This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you." (NAS95)? How do we show love for one another? A like on FB?
It is easy for our mouth to form the word “love” (Ezekiel 33:31) " for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain. (NKJV) It is not real, not sincere, (1 Peter 1:22) Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure…
“Bad,” what does that mean, really? Boring, stale, lectures, no personality, unprepared, goes on tangents, hard to understand, expects too much, expects too little ... How many items could we place on the list? Are they legitimate? What can be done? Is the problem the teacher or the student?
Let’s begin by establishing the importance of teaching others. Romans 12: 6-7 challenges us to use our gift of teaching. Ephesians 4:11-16 explains that we are to teach to, “build each other up to unity.” However, James 3:1-2 and Matthew 5:19 warn that teaching carries great responsibility. James 1:5 instructs us to pray for wisdom. Being unprepared is not…
Consider the implication of I Peter 3: 1-6, “Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Israel’s conquest of Canaan began with the miraculous fall of Jericho. They marched around the city, the priests blew their trumpets, the people shouted, and the walls fell down—all as God had promised.
But the great victory at Jericho was followed by a humiliating defeat at the city of Ai. Israel’s army was routed; three dozen soldiers died. Seeing this, “the hearts of the people melted and became as water.” Their leader, Joshua, was devastated. With clothes torn and head covered with dust in mourning, he fell on his face before God,…
“And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach” (Colossians 1:21-22).
Christians are people who have been reconciled to God (see also Romans 5:10; 2 Corinthians 5:18-19). As we saw last week, reconciliation means that a relationship that was wrecked is now restored. In the passages above, it is our relationship to God that is in view. Sin estranges each of us…
