Have you ever started watching a movie when it was more than halfway over? Can you figure out what is going on without asking questions? You can probably get the gist of the story, but will the ending have as full a meaning to you if you do not know the backstory? Of course not, and the Old Testament is the key backstory for the events in the new Testament. But many Christians only bother to study the New Testament passages. In times past it was quite common to see someone with a shirt, or a hat, or maybe a bracelet that read “WWJD.” This, as many of us know, stands for “What would Jesus do?” I believe it is great, when put in different situations, to ask yourself “what would Jesus do?” However, we should take that one step further and ask, “What would Jesus desire?”

If we turn to Matthew 28:19-20, we can learn exactly what Jesus would desire of each and every one of us. The text reads, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them…

The Bible mentions literally hundreds of individual people. It tells us a great deal about some of them. But you might be surprised to know that it says almost nothing about what they looked like. Oh, some men are described as handsome, like Saul, David, and Absalom. Some women are described as beautiful, like Sarah, Rebekah, Abigail, Bathsheba, and Esther. But details are extremely limited.

            It may well be that the besetting sin of modern day discipleship is its failure to procreate itself. Speed has been so aggrandized in our society that it has become necessary that whatever we do we must do in a hurry.  We seem to be possessed with a determination to succeed more than to be spiritually inclined and equip ourselves for eternity, so we tend to put off thing that don’t pertain to our quests.  One of those things is reaching out and touching someone.
