Access in Prayer

“The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth” (Psalm 145:18).

In nations ruled by monarchs, anyone who would speak to the king or queen must request an audience and wait for approval (which they may or may not get). In our own country, you can’t just walk into the White House to sit and talk with the President. Corporate executives at any level typically require a scheduled appointment for any sort of discussion.

Not so with the King of heaven. He is always ready and willing to listen to our greatest burdens and our smallest concerns. Through Christ, “we have boldness and access with confidence” (Ephesians 4:13). I’m thankful to know that access is mine any time I want or need it, every moment of every day. I don’t have to make an appointment or wait in line. I don’t have to show ID or give my Social Security number. I don’t have to log in with a password or wait for someone to text me an access code. All I have to do is pray.

And though “we do not know how to pray as we should” (Romans 8:26) — though the loftiest of human speech is inadequate before the eternal God — He still listens. With such a God, let’s seize every chance to speak to Him. Let’s bring Him our every care and trust Him with our every need.

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).
