What Can A Mother Do?

Mother's day! We love our mothers, and rightfully so. Much has been written about the special, nurturing love of a mother. It's not that a mother's love is better or more important than that of a father. It's just different, unique. I believe we can see God's handiwork when we observe how He designed the family. A child needs both the special love of a mother and the different but equally special love of a father. Both are needed for the full nurturing, molding and development of a child in the home.
When a couple become parents their lives change forevermore. When a woman becomes a mother she becomes a different woman, and she'll never go back to being the woman she used to be. She grows, her focus in life changes. For the next twenty or so years her life is greatly centered around loving, caring for, guiding, instructing, raising her children. When her children grow up and move away on their own, she'll still carry them with her in her heart. She'll still care about how they're doing, what happens to them. Though they may be grown and a thousand miles away, they'll still be a big part of her.
Obviously, a mother wants what's best for her children. The question is, “What can a mother do to insure the best for her children?” A lot of suggestions come to mind. Make sure they get a good education. Make sure they receive good, consistent health care. Get them the training necessary for them to have a good career. Keep them away from drugs. The list could go on…
All of those things are important, and a loving, caring mother would do well to give proper attention to each one as she raises her children. However, none of them is the most important thing a mother can do to insure the best for her children. If a mother gave diligent attention to all of those issues, and a dozen more, she still would not have done the very best she can do for her children.
What can a mother do to insure the best for her children? Get them to Heaven! We get all caught up in the here and now, and we often forget the most important matter- eternity, getting to Heaven. A loving, caring mother should see that her children receive, and appreciate, a good education. She should make sure they receive good health care. She should encourage them to prepare diligently for a good career. She should be ever vigilant to teach them to abstain from practices that could cause them great harm, even death. But all of those matters deal with their physical life that will only last for a relatively brief period of time, even if they live into very old age. Eternity has to do with their eternal life, and that's forever. It has to do with their ongoing well being and security, and that far surpasses anything this world has to offer.
A mother who really puts her love for her children into the most far-reaching action possible will do everything she can to get her children to Heaven. She'll teach them about God and godliness. She'll bring them to Bible classes and worship and be there herself as a good example. She'll live the life of a faithful Christian before them and teach them to do the same. Her greatest, deepest, most abiding desire for her children will be that they will be with her in Heaven. With that in mind, “Mom, are you doing the best you can for your children?”…
